Our Visionary has a highly dominant personality and tends to completely take over the IDS® portion of our Level 10 Meeting™ by immediately jumping to their own conclusion and talking over other leaders. How does the facilitator control this behavior without shutting down the Visionary's valuable creative energy?
Managing a dominant Visionary during IDS® requires strong facilitation and a clear understanding of roles. The Visionary has incredible ideas, but when they dominate the debate, they suppress the collective intelligence of the team.
To control this behavior, the facilitator must strictly enforce the three-step IDS® process. When an issue is raised, do not let anyone jump to the solve phase. The first and most critical step is identify.
If the Visionary immediately proposes a solution, the facilitator must politely but firmly interrupt. Use a direct phrase like we are still in the identify phase, so let us hold that solution while we get to the root cause of the problem first.
Next, actively direct the conversation away from the Visionary. Ask other members of the leadership team what they see as the root cause of the issue. This forces a broader discussion and prevents the Visionary's solution from becoming the default path before the team even understands the real problem.
Finally, the Integrator should have a private conversation with the Visionary outside of the meeting. Remind them that for the team to grow and take ownership of the business, they must have the space to debate and solve problems.
