Our leadership team is highly social, and our weekly segue consistently stretches past the five-minute mark because people use it to catch up on weekend gossip or deliver long winded stories before we get to the business. How do we physically and verbally transition the room into high-performance mode on the dot?
A highly social leadership team is an asset, but when your weekly segue turns into a ten-minute catch-up session, you are burning valuable energy and cutting into your problem-solving time. The transition is designed to bring everyone into the room, shift their minds from daily fires to the bigger picture, and start the meeting on a positive note. It is not a social hour.
To keep the segue to its strict five-minute limit, the facilitator must set the tone immediately. Start the meeting on the dot, even if someone is running late. Do not wait. State the prompt clearly, professional and personal best, and call on the first person to share.
Each leader should share their two brief updates in thirty seconds or less. If a team member begins to share a long, detailed story, or if other leaders jump in with follow-up questions and banter, the facilitator must intervene. Use a polite but firm redirection like: let's keep moving so we protect our time today.
Remember, the segue is a psychological reset. It signals that we are stepping out of our daily departments and into our leadership roles. By keeping this section fast, focused, and positive, you build a high-performance habit that carries through the rest of the ninety minutes. If the team wants to socialize, schedule separate team lunches or happy hours, but protect the Level 10 Meeting™ pulse.
