We have highly competent leaders who show up to every Level 10 Meeting but never add issues to the board or participate in IDS unless they are directly asked. How do we transition these silent contributors into active problem solvers?
A leader who sits silently in a Level 10 Meeting™ is withholding value from the organization. Even if they are introverted, their seat on the Accountability Chart requires them to actively participate in building the business. When they stay quiet, you lose their perspective, and you risk making poor, one-sided decisions.
First, your Integrator must address this behavior outside the meeting during a one-on-one conversation. Use the GWC™ framework. Ask if they truly have the capacity and desire to participate in the strategic direction of the company. Make it clear that active participation in IDS® is a non-negotiable requirement of their seat.
Second, during the meeting, the facilitator must actively draw them into the conversation without making them feel defensive. When processing an issue that touches their department, ask them directly for their perspective before a decision is finalized. Use open questions, such as, how does this impact your department, or what is your view on this solution?
Finally, track their contributions. If they never add issues to the weekly list, challenge them to bring at least one operational or strategic issue to the board next week. By providing clear expectations outside the room and gentle prompting inside the room, you will help your quiet leaders find their voice and contribute to a stronger, more transferable business.
