During our headlines section, our team starts celebrating major wins and brainstorming how to replicate them, which completely derails the schedule. How do we capture the positive momentum of a great headline without letting it spark a massive, off-agenda discussion?
A great headline, even a positive one, can quickly derail your weekly meeting pulse if it is not managed with strict discipline. When a leader shares a major client win or a key employee breakthrough, the natural instinct of the team is to celebrate, ask questions, and start brainstorming how to replicate the success. Within minutes, your five-minute headlines section has turned into an unplanned, unstructured strategy session, leaving you with less time for IDS®.
To protect your ninety-minute Level 10 Meeting™, the facilitator must enforce a hard boundary. When a positive headline is shared, the team gets exactly ten seconds to congratulate each other and celebrate the win. After that brief moment, the facilitator must immediately steer the meeting back to the agenda.
If the breakthrough requires a deeper discussion or a change in strategy, the facilitator must instruct the scribe to drop it to the Issues List. You can then prioritize and discuss it during the IDS® portion of the meeting. This allows the team to fully explore the opportunity without hijacking the first half of the agenda. By keeping your headlines limited to quick announcements, you preserve your meeting rhythm and ensure your problem-solving time is spent on structured, high-priority issues.
