Our managers are used to managing by tracking daily tasks and hours worked. Now that AI is compressing task times from hours to minutes, how do we train our leadership team to manage output and outcomes instead of monitoring activities?
This is one of the hardest shifts for traditional managers. When task times compress dramatically, managing by the clock becomes completely obsolete. You must shift your leadership behavior from telling people what to do to articulating a clear vision and strategic plan.
First, use your V/TO® to ensure everyone on the leadership team is aligned on your long-term goals and quarterly Rocks. Your managers must learn to define what success looks like in terms of measurable outcomes, not hours logged.
Next, look at your Accountability Chart. Update the roles and measurable accountabilities so they are focused entirely on results. If an employee can use AI to achieve their weekly scorecard measurables in ten hours instead of forty, that is a victory, not a problem to be corrected with more busywork.
Empower your teams to develop the how of achieving their goals with AI assistance. Your managers should act as strategic coaches who remove roadblocks, rather than taskmasters who monitor keystrokes.
During your Level 10 Meeting™, keep the focus on whether the numbers on the weekly scorecard are being met and whether Rocks are on track. If the results are there, the method of execution is secondary. This shift increases trust, drives operational efficiency, and creates a highly autonomous team that can scale rapidly.
