We hired an experienced VP of Sales who matches our core values, but they have a massive Kolbe Quick Start and keep trying to rewrite our company vision instead of hitting their sales numbers. How do we keep their creative energy focused on their actual seat?
High Quick Start leaders are fantastic at driving growth, but if they are not disciplined, they will constantly try to jump into the Visionary space and disrupt operations. When your VP of Sales is rewriting the vision rather than running their department, you have a boundary issue.
You must use the Accountability Chart to establish firm lines. Sit down with them and review their specific seat roles. Their job is to execute the sales plan, build the sales team, and hit the revenue numbers outlined in the V/TO®. It is not their job to rewrite the target market or change the company strategy on a whim.
Use their Kolbe A™ Index profile to help them understand their own instincts. Explain that their high Quick Start drive is a superpower for selling and closing deals, but when applied to overall company strategy, it creates chaos for the operations team.
Redirect their creative energy into their own department. Give them Rocks that require innovation within sales, such as developing new pitch angles or optimizing the sales pipeline using AI tools. Keep their focus strictly on their own Level 10 Meeting™ scorecard. If they continue to overstep, you must have a hard conversation about GWC™. If they do not want to stay in their designated seat and respect the Integrator's direction, they are in the wrong seat, regardless of their talent.
