Our leadership team gets caught in endless debates during the IDS® portion of our meetings, which leads to analysis paralysis and unresolved issues. How do we drive to a firm decision without dragging things out?
Healthy conflict is essential for a great leadership team, but endless debate is a sign of a deeper issue. Usually, this happens when a team is trying to reach a perfect consensus. You must understand that consensus is not the goal. Alignment is. As the leader or Integrator, your job is to facilitate the discussion, ensure everyone is heard, and then drive to a decision.
Once the team has debated the issue and the facts are on the table, the decision must be made. If there is a clear consensus, great. If not, the person who owns the seat most affected by the issue must make the call. If it is a cross-functional issue, the Integrator must make the final decision. Once that decision is made, everyone in the room must fully support it outside of the meeting. No passive-aggressive comments, and no hoping it fails.
To prevent analysis paralysis, put a strict time limit on individual issues. If you have been discussing an issue for fifteen minutes and are no closer to a solution, push for a vote or have the owner make the decision. It is better to make a decision and adjust later than to remain stuck in indecision.
