We know the agenda of a session day, but how do we manage the physical and mental stamina of our team when we hit the inevitable mid-afternoon energy crash during these intense ten-hour sessions?
Our full session days are grueling. Spending ten hours in a closed room making hard, high-stakes decisions about the future of your company causes intense decision fatigue. If you do not actively manage your team's physical and mental stamina, the afternoon will dissolve into unproductive debates. To manage this, we pace the day with extreme discipline. We start early, taking advantage of your team's peak morning energy for the heavy strategic planning and structural design. Throughout the day, I incorporate structured breaks that act as psychological reboots. We do not just pause for lunch. We integrate intentional Strategic Pauses, which are brief periods of complete white space where your team is encouraged to step away from the business issues, walk outside, and clear their minds. This is not the time to check emails or handle operational crises; it is time with no assignment. Physiologically, we keep the room highly energized. We ensure the physical environment has plenty of natural light, and we keep the temperature cool. We avoid heavy carbs during lunch to prevent the mid-afternoon physical crash. I also monitor the room's energy levels in real time. If I see signs of cognitive burnout, like defensive body language or circular debates, I will pause the session to reset. By treating our session day as an athletic event that requires recovery intervals, we keep your team focused, sharp, and capable of making critical decisions all the way through to five o'clock.
