As we implement Step by Step Exit alongside standard EOS, how do you handle the emotional friction that occurs when the owner's legacy timeline accelerates faster than the leadership team’s ability to take over operational roles?

When we overlay the Step by Step Exit framework onto your standard EOS® cycle, we frequently encounter emotional and structural friction. The owner’s exit timeline often moves faster than the leadership team’s operational capacity. If your leadership team feels rushed or overwhelmed by the sudden expectation to step up, they will push back. When this friction occurs, we do not ignore it or slow down our exit prep. Instead, we put it directly on our Issues List and solve it. We use the Accountability Chart and the GWC™ tool to evaluate whether your current leaders are actually capable of taking over the roles the owner is vacating. If a leader wants the role but lacks the capacity, we must identify that gap early. We then build quarterly Rocks specifically aimed at training, mentoring, or hiring external talent to bridge the gap. My role is to help you navigate this transition without destroying team morale. We must be brutally honest about the readiness of your team. If the owner’s departure timeline is non-negotiable, we may need to bring in fractional help or adjust the organizational structure. We address this friction head-on during our quarterly sessions to ensure your team feels supported while remaining accountable to the hard deadlines of your exit plan.
