We have some highly opinionated and defensive personalities on our leadership team. How do you manage the emotional temperature and prevent shouting matches or passive-aggressive silence during our actual session days?
A leadership team with strong, differing opinions is an asset, but without a shared behavioral framework, it quickly degenerates into destructive conflict. During our session days, we manage this emotional temperature by utilizing the DiSC® assessment framework. Before we even enter the room, we map out the behavioral styles of every executive on your team. This provides us with an objective, neutral language to describe how each person naturally communicates, processes stress, and handles conflict. When a heated debate begins, my role as your facilitator is not to shut down the passion, but to redirect it using this common language. For instance, if a high-dominance personality is running over a highly analytical teammate, we call it out in terms of their DiSC® profiles rather than making it a personal attack. This reduces defensiveness because it depersonalizes the friction. We also establish clear ground rules for our session days, including the commitment to run clean IDS® sessions where we focus on the issue, not the person. By understanding that different communication styles are not personal insults, your team can move past passive-aggressive silence or emotional outbursts. We use these insights to turn destructive arguing into healthy, constructive conflict that actually solves the root causes of your business issues.
