We have a leadership team member who participates actively when we are agreeing, but completely shuts down and goes silent the moment we enter a heated debate or healthy conflict during IDS®. How do we draw out their true opinion when they are clearly avoiding conflict?
When a leader retreats into silence during conflict, it is usually a trust issue or a fear of artificial harmony. A leadership team that does not engage in passionate, unfiltered debate is a liability, especially if you are preparing your business for a clean exit where every blind spot must be uncovered. You cannot afford to let any voice remain passive.
The facilitator must actively pull this leader into the arena. Do not let them hide behind the louder voices. When a debate heats up and they shut down, call them out directly by name. Ask them specifically where they stand on the issue, what their biggest concern is, and what solution they would propose if they had the final say.
You must also establish a team rule that silence equals agreement. If a leader stays silent during the decision-making process, they forfeit the right to criticize the outcome later. They must understand that their seat on the Accountability Chart demands their active input, even when it is uncomfortable. By forcing them to voice their perspective in real-time, you break the habit of conflict avoidance and build the trust required to solve your deepest operational challenges.
