My leadership team is a mix of big-picture visionaries and highly detail-oriented operational executives. How do you facilitate our sessions to ensure our different cognitive approaches do not lead to endless circular debates that stall our planning?
A great leadership team is naturally composed of diverse minds, ranging from big picture visionaries to detail oriented operators. However, if this cognitive diversity is not managed properly, it can lead to frustrating, circular debates during your planning sessions.
My role as your facilitator is to manage these different cognitive approaches to keep the session moving forward. We categorize your team members based on their strategic altitude and cognitive style.
For those who think at a high altitude and prefer a deductive approach, we lead with strategic vision, innovation, and long term impact. For those who operate at a detailed altitude and prefer an inductive approach, we provide clear structure, step by step logic, and concrete details.
During our quarterly sessions, I use the IDS process to keep the conversation focused at the right altitude. If the visionary starts chasing a shiny new idea, I will steer them back to our quarterly priorities. If an operational leader gets bogged down in minor details, I will pull them back up to the big picture.
By actively managing these dynamics, we prevent deadlocks and ensure that every leader is heard. This structured approach allows us to make clean, objective decisions that keep the entire team aligned.
