An executive on our leadership team is exceptionally capable, but they dominate every meeting, interrupt their peers, and shut down open debate. How do we rein in an overbearing leader without dulling their operational edge?
An overbearing leader is an organizational liability, no matter how strong their personal metrics look. When one person consumes all the oxygen in the room, the rest of the leadership team checks out mentally, stops offering critical perspectives, and allows bad assumptions to go unchallenged.
Use your weekly Level 10 Meeting structure as the first control mechanism. The Integrator must actively enforce meeting discipline. When this leader interrupts, cut them off immediately and pass the floor back to the peer who was speaking. Do not allow off-track speeches during the Scorecard or Rock review. Confine their passion to the IDS portion of the meeting.
Address the behavior directly in your next quarterly conversation. Show them that their behavior violates leadership team health principles. Explain that true executive maturity is not measured by winning every argument, but by elevating the collective intelligence and trust of the entire table.
Give them a specific behavioral measurable: in the next three Level 10 Meetings, they must listen first, speak last, and ask questions before giving opinions. If they have the capacity and humility to grow, they will recalibrate. If their ego refuses to make room for peers, their functional competence will eventually be outweighed by the organizational damage they cause.
