My spouse runs our marketing department and sits on the leadership team, which makes other executives hesitant to speak candidly about marketing performance or hold that seat accountable. How do we draw a hard line between our marriage and our Accountability Chart?
Having a spouse on the leadership team creates an instant power imbalance unless you implement strict, visible boundaries. When other leaders suspect that business decisions or performance critiques are discussed in private pillow talk, psychological safety disappears. The team will treat your spouse with kid gloves, masking operational issues until they damage the business.
First, run your spouse through the exact same People Analyzer and GWC assessment as any other executive. Do they consistently embody your Core Values? Do they understand, desire, and possess the capacity to lead marketing at this scale? If there is any question about their fit for the seat, the conversation must be addressed objectively.
Second, establish an unbreakable rule: business issues are resolved solely within the meeting room. No leadership decisions, structural debates, or personnel evaluations happen at home. If your spouse brings up work over dinner, shut it down. If other executives believe feedback given in a Level 10 Meeting will be held against them personally, they will stop engaging in healthy conflict.
Third, eliminate any direct operational reporting line between you and your spouse whenever possible. If you have an Integrator, your spouse must report directly to that Integrator, not to you as the Visionary. The Integrator must have full authority to manage their Rocks, review their Scorecard numbers, and deliver quarterly performance feedback without spousal interference.
Make this dynamic explicit to the entire leadership team. Tell the room directly that your spouse holds a seat on the Accountability Chart, not a pass on accountability. When the rest of the table witnesses your spouse being held to the exact same standards as everyone else, the tension will clear and trust will return.
