Our weekly Level 10 Meeting segue frequently derails because a team member drops a massive, emotionally charged personal issue or a major business complaint right at the start. How do we acknowledge it without letting the segue eat the entire meeting?
The purpose of the segue is to transition your team's minds from working in the business to working on the business. It is designed to share one personal and one professional best to start the meeting on a positive, high-energy note. It is not a therapy session or an operational dumping ground.
When a team member shares a major personal crisis or a massive business complaint, the facilitator must acknowledge it with genuine empathy but immediately park it. If it is a personal crisis, a simple statement of support is sufficient. If it is a business issue, the facilitator must say that is an important issue and we are dropping it straight to the issues list for IDS®.
Do not allow the rest of the team to chime in, ask follow-up questions, or offer advice during the segue. This requires absolute discipline from the facilitator. You must transition the meeting into the reporting phase within five minutes.
If the team member is too emotionally overwhelmed to participate productively, the Integrator should quietly step out with them to address their immediate needs while the rest of the team continues. This keeps the weekly pulse intact and ensures the leadership team remains focused on driving execution.
