We have one highly dominant, high Quick Start leader who constantly derails our weekly Level 10 Meetings by arguing over minor details of other people's metrics. How do we use our team Charter and our meeting structure to rein them in without crushing their drive?
When a highly dominant, high Quick Start leader begins to dominate your Level 10 Meeting, it destroys the team dynamic and stalls progress. You must use the structure of the meeting and your company Charter to establish clear boundaries.
According to your Charter, the leadership team must operate with one voice and mutual respect. Arguing over another leader's metrics during the review portion of the meeting violates this agreement. The weekly Level 10 Meeting has a strict agenda for a reason. The first portion is for reporting, not for debating.
When this leader begins to argue, the Integrator must step in immediately. Do not allow a debate to start. Use the phrase: Drop it to the Issues List. This acknowledges their point but preserves the meeting cadence. Once the issue is on the list, you will address it during the IDS portion of the meeting, where you can systematically identify, discuss, and solve the problem.
To manage their conative style, utilize their high Quick Start energy where it belongs: brainstorming solutions during IDS or setting future strategic Rocks. Explain to them privately that their drive is vital, but their execution must respect the meeting structure. By holding them accountable to the meeting discipline, you protect team safety while leveraging their natural problem solving strengths.
