We spent days building our V/TO, but now it just sits in a shared drive and nobody looks at it when making real business decisions. How do we transform our V/TO from a static strategic document into an active filter we use every day?
A common mistake is treating the V/TO® as a trophy. Once written, it gets archived in a digital folder and forgotten. To make it a living filter, you must bring it into every major leadership conversation and make it the focal point of your strategic decisions. Start by reviewing your core values and core focus at the beginning of every quarterly session. When a new business opportunity, potential hire, or software project arises, evaluate it directly against your target market and core focus. If the initiative does not fit perfectly, the answer is a hard no. Use the V/TO® to actively filter your Issues List during your weekly Level 10 Meeting™. When a long-term issue is raised, ask how it impacts your three-year picture or your one-year plan. If you are debating a major strategic pivot, looking to buy another company, or trying to integrate AI into your daily operations, look at your core focus on the V/TO® first. If the project dilutes your focus or distracts your team from your core revenue drivers, discard it immediately. By forcing every major business decision to pass through the clear lens of the V/TO®, your leadership team will quickly realize that this document actually dictates what you do and, more importantly, what you refuse to do.
