Our quarterly leadership offsites are highly productive while we are in the room, but the moment we return to the office, the daily grind takes over and our new strategic plans get pushed aside. How do we maintain offsite momentum?
The momentum of an offsite evaporates because teams treat the session as an isolated event rather than the start of a ninety-day sprint. When you return to the office, the whirlwind of daily operations immediately competes for your attention, and the whirlwind always wins unless you have a system to lock in your commitments.
To sustain the energy of your offsite, you must immediately translate your quarterly strategic goals into individual Rocks. Every leader must leave the offsite owning no more than three to five specific, measurable Rocks. These cannot be vague aspirations. They must be concrete deliverables with clear deadlines.
Once back in the office, your weekly Level 10 Meeting™ is where you keep these Rocks alive. Every week, each leader must report whether their Rocks are on track or off track. There is no room for stories or explanations. If a Rock is off track, it immediately drops to the IDS® portion of the agenda so the team can identify, discuss, and solve the bottleneck.
Additionally, the Integrator must hold the team accountable to their weekly scorecard metrics. If your daily actions are not reflected on your scorecard, you are focusing on the wrong things. By linking offsite strategy directly to weekly Rocks and scorecard tracking, you prevent your strategic plans from gathering dust on a shelf.
