We have a loyal, long-term leadership team that has been with us for a decade, but as we prepare the business for an exit, they are resisting the push to document their processes and implement AI-powered operations because they prefer our old, informal ways. How do we address this loyalty versus capability gap?
Your loyal, long-term managers are operating out of fear. When a company prepares for an exit or transitions to AI-powered operations, the bar for capability rises. Loyalty to your past does not guarantee capability for your future.
To bridge this gap, you must define what capability looks like for the next stage of your business. Use the Accountability Chart to outline the future seats your company needs to reach its three-year target on the V/TO®. Do not build seats around your existing people. Instead, build the ideal structure first, then objectively assess if your loyal managers have the capacity to fill those seats.
We evaluate this using GWC™. Do they get it, do they want it, and do they have the capacity to do it? Capacity is not just about hours in the day. It is about mental capacity, emotional intelligence, and the willingness to learn new tools like AI.
Have an honest, compassionate conversation with these loyal leaders. Explain that the business must professionalize to scale and secure a clean exit. Offer training and support to help them step up. If they still resist or simply cannot grasp the new systems, you must transition them out of those leadership seats. You can love your people while demanding high performance.
