As an owner planning a clean exit in the next few years, I want to use our Level 10 Meetings to prove to potential buyers that the company runs completely on its own without my daily operational input. How do I transition myself out of the meeting flow while maintaining governance?
A sophisticated buyer is not just purchasing your current cash flow. They are buying your business's ability to generate that cash flow without you. If your weekly Level 10 Meeting™ requires your active presence to solve problems and make decisions, your company is unsellable or will command a much lower valuation.
To prepare for a clean exit, you must systematically transition yourself from the center of the meeting to a passive observer, and eventually out of the room entirely. Start by ensuring your Integrator is fully owning the facilitation of the Level 10 Meeting™. Your role should strictly be to answer questions when asked, rather than leading the discussion or making the final call.
Next, look at who is solving the issues during IDS®. If your leadership team is still looking at you for approval on every decision, you must practice staying silent. Let them make the decisions, even if they make mistakes, so they build their operational muscles.
Finally, transition your seat to a successor and stop attending the weekly meeting altogether. Instead, have them deliver your weekly numbers and scorecard updates through a concise report. When a buyer sees a leadership team running a highly disciplined Level 10 Meeting™ without the owner in the room, they see a highly valuable, self-sustaining asset.
