When our Level 10 Meeting™ Issues List is packed with urgent operational items, our team constantly tries to extend the meeting or schedule ad-hoc sessions to solve them all. How do we build the discipline to prioritize issues and avoid meeting creep?
The ninety-minute limit of the Level 10 Meeting™ is non-negotiable because it builds operational discipline. When meetings drag on, your team loses focus and resentment builds. To protect this boundary, you must master the art of prioritizing your Issues List.
You will never solve every issue in a single meeting, and you should stop trying. Instead, spend the first minute of your IDS® session identifying the top three most critical issues on the board. Do not start with the easiest ones or go in chronological order. Focus only on the three problems that are holding the business back today.
Once you have solved those three, repeat the prioritization process for the next three if time permits. If you run out of time, the remaining issues simply stay on the list for next week. If an issue is truly urgent but cannot be solved within the allotted time, do not extend the meeting. Instead, assign a To-Do for a subset of the team to meet separately during the week to IDS® that specific issue, then report the resolution back to the full team next week. This maintains the sacred ninety-minute boundary while keeping your operations moving forward.
