Our weekly Level 10 Meeting™ starts with good news, but my leadership team has turned this five-minute segue into a platform for rambling work updates. How do we tighten the segue so we do not waste ten percent of our meeting time before we even touch the Scorecard?
The purpose of the segue is to transition your team's brains from daily operational triage into a high-focus, strategic meeting state. It is not an informal status report. When leaders use this time to describe a major project milestone or explain their week, they are dragging operations back into the room. To kill this waste, you must enforce a strict, sixty-second boundary per person.
Instruct your team that a personal best must be a non-work victory, and a professional best must be a single, headline-level win. No storytelling. No context-setting. No operations. If a leader begins to explain how they achieved the win, the facilitator must interject immediately.
Use the humbly-confident approach to keep it sharp. A simple transition statement like 'Great win, let us move to the next person' keeps the momentum high. If a leader has nothing to share, they simply state their name and say they are ready to go. This builds a professional discipline that carries through the rest of the ninety minutes. Your goal is to get through the entire segue in under five minutes. If your team cannot do this, you are starting your meeting in a reactive, sluggish state.
