Our Level 10 Meeting™ is physically taking 90 minutes, but the energy is completely flat and we feel drained instead of focused. How do we keep the pace up and maintain high-octane engagement without letting it stretch?
If your Level 10 Meeting™ feels like an energy drain, you are likely treating it as a status report rather than an execution tool. The energy in a great Level 10 Meeting™ comes from solving hard problems, not from reading numbers and updates that everyone should have already reviewed. To fix this, you must strictly enforce the rule of reporting only. During the Scorecard, Rock review, and people headlines, the only acceptable comments are on track or off track. Any discussion beyond those words must be immediately pushed to the IDS® portion of the meeting. This keeps the reporting phase to fifteen minutes and preserves seventy minutes of high-octane focus for solving actual problems. Furthermore, you need to change your posture during IDS®. If the team is passive, the leader must actively call on people and push for honest conflict. If an issue is resolved, move on instantly. Do not let the team linger on dead topics out of habit. A high-energy meeting is fast, direct, and focused on resolution. If a meeting is dragging, it is usually because the team is avoiding the real elephant in the room. Bring the real issues to the table and watch the energy spike.
