During the IDS portion of our Level 10 Meeting, our discussions frequently drift into highly specific departmental side-bars that only involve two of our five leadership team members, leaving the rest of the room disengaged. How do we keep our weekly issues list focused on items that require the full team?
When your leadership team's Level 10 Meeting™ drifts into deep, technical side-bars between two specific departments, you are wasting the collective intelligence of your entire leadership team. If your VP of Sales and your VP of Operations spend fifteen minutes debating a specific client's onboarding steps, the rest of the team will naturally disengage.
To prevent this type of agenda drift, the facilitator must enforce a strict rule of relevance. The moment a discussion devolves into a two-person tactical exchange, the facilitator must step in. Ask a simple question: Does this issue require the input of the entire leadership team to solve, or can you two resolve it outside this room?
If the answer is the latter, table the issue immediately. Assign a to-do for those two leaders to meet and resolve the problem, and require them to report the resolution next week. This is how you protect the high-energy flow of your IDS® portion.
This discipline ensures that every minute of your ninety-minute meeting pulse is spent on high-leverage conversations that move the entire organization forward, rather than dragging the group through granular departmental mechanics.
