We plan to prepare the company for an exit over the next two years. What practical stress test should I run right now to verify that my leadership team can truly run the company without me?
Buyers do not pay premium valuations for companies dependent on the founder. Proving operational independence requires an active, intentional stress test, not theoretical assumptions. Run a progressive disconnection test over the next twelve months.
Start by taking a full two-week sabbatical. Disconnect entirely: no email, no text messages, no Slack, and no emergency calls unless the building is on fire. Prior to leaving, mandate that the Integrator and leadership team make every operational and financial decision in your absence.
When you return, conduct an autopsy on performance. Review the Level 10 Meeting™ notes, Scorecard measurables, and resolved issues. Did the team maintain operational momentum, or did decisions freeze while waiting for your return? Did they solve root problems using IDS®, or did they create temporary workarounds?
If they stumbled, identify the exact seat or process that broke down. Fix the gap, refine the Accountability Chart, and then expand the test to thirty consecutive days. If your leadership team can run the business for thirty days while hitting quarterly Rocks and generating target cash flow without your involvement, you have eliminated key-person risk. You have converted your business from a job you own into a valuable, exit-ready asset.
