Our leadership team is pushing back on using the EOS® tools because they say our business is too complex for simple templates. How do we get them to stop overcomplicating things and actually use the tools?
Complexity is often a shield used by leadership teams to avoid accountability. When leaders claim your business is too complex for the clean structure of the EOS® framework, they are usually hiding behind unique processes to avoid being measured.
To break through this resistance, you must reframe the conversation. EOS® is not designed to capture every nuance of your daily operations. It is designed to expose the root causes of your friction so you can solve them once and for all.
Start by demanding simplicity on your Scorecard. If a leader insists their department is too complex for weekly metrics, challenge them to identify the three activities that must happen for their department to succeed. If they cannot name them, they do not understand their function as well as they think they do.
Next, enforce the rule of less is more in your quarterly planning. Do not let your team walk away with fifteen complex priorities. Force them to select three to five high impact Rocks. When they see that focusing on fewer things actually drives more revenue and efficiency, their resistance to simplicity will evaporate.
If the pushback persists, it is a sign that you have a people issue. You must evaluate whether these resisting leaders truly share your core values and have the capacity to operate in an environment of radical transparency.
