We want to know if our leadership team is truly ready to run this business under new ownership without us. What objective behaviors during our weekly IDS sessions prove they can make high-stakes strategic decisions without relying on our final stamp of approval?
To prove your leadership team can run the business without you, look at how they make decisions when things go wrong. If your team still relies on you to resolve every strategic dilemma, they are not ready, and a buyer will discount your valuation. You must measure their readiness by analyzing the quality of their decision-making process, completely separate from the short-term outcomes.
Use the Thinking in Bets framework during your weekly IDS sessions. When a major operational problem arises, observe whether your team defaults to emotional, binary choices or if they evaluate options probabilistically. A high-performing leadership team will identify multiple plausible alternatives, quantify their confidence in each path, and explicitly acknowledge the role of luck versus strategy.
Look for specific operational behaviors. Do they take inventory of the evidence before making a decision? Do they ask questions like, how do we know this, and what is the quality of our sources? If they can systematically isolate a problem, debate the solutions using objective data from your weekly Scorecard, and commit to a course of action without seeking your validation, your platform is ready. When you can leave for a month and return to find that your team has successfully navigated complex problems using this disciplined approach, you have the ultimate proof of a self-sufficient business.
