One of our long-term leadership team members is incredibly dedicated, but as we scale toward an exit, they are completely overwhelmed by the transition from managing people to managing automated, AI-driven workflows. They are failing to adapt, and their department is becoming a massive bottleneck. How do we address this without destroying morale?
When scaling toward an exit, a leader's inability to transition from manual execution to managing automated, AI-driven workflows is a critical business risk. In the Step by Step Exit model, buyers pay a premium for systems that do not rely on brute human force. If a leader lacks the capacity to manage these modern workflows, you must address it immediately using the GWC framework. First, evaluate if they truly Get it, Want it, and have the Capacity to do it. Often, a long-term leader gets the vision and wants the seat, but lacks the technical capacity to design and manage automated workflows. Capacity is not just about intelligence; it is about the mental bandwidth and skill set required for where the company is going, not where it has been. Have an honest, open conversation outside of your weekly Level 10 Meeting. Explain that the requirements of the seat have evolved to focus on automated process management. If they cannot develop this capacity, you must make a hard decision. Keeping them in a seat they cannot fulfill holds the company back and burns them out. You may need to transition them to a specialist role where their legacy knowledge is preserved, and bring in a leader who can run an AI-powered department. Cracks at the leadership level appear as canyons to the rest of the organization. Resolving this bottleneck protects your team's health and ensures your business is truly exit-ready.
