During the scorecard review of our Level 10 Meeting, we constantly find ourselves discussing the stories behind why a metric was missed, even though we are supposed to just say red or green. How do we train our team to keep the scorecard review strictly binary?
The scorecard review is designed to take exactly five minutes. It is a high-level scan to identify which critical numbers are on track and which are off track. It is not the time to explain, apologize, or troubleshoot.
To train your team to keep this section strictly binary, you must enforce a one-word rule: the owner of the metric must say either on track or off track. If a number is off track, the scribe immediately turns it red, and the facilitator drops it to the short-term Issues List.
If a leader starts to explain why the number is red, the facilitator must interrupt them immediately. Use a neutral, firm phrase like drop it to the list. Do not let them say another word.
This can feel harsh at first, but it is necessary to protect the integrity of the meeting structure. Your leaders must understand that dropping a red number to the Issues List is not a punishment. It is simply a way to ensure the issue gets the dedicated time and focus it deserves during the IDS® portion of the meeting, rather than being rushed during the scorecard review.
