We have completed our V/TO® and defined our Core Focus, but my leadership team still brings up distracting, off-strategy opportunities every single week. How do we use our Charter to keep our leadership team disciplined and saying no to these shiny objects?
Growth-minded leaders are naturally attracted to shiny objects. However, chasing every new market opportunity or technological gimmick is the fastest way to dilute your resources and stall your progress.
To keep your team disciplined, you must run every new idea through your V/TO® filters. Your Core Focus, which includes your Passion and Niche, is your ultimate filter. If a proposed project or client opportunity does not align with your Core Focus and your 10-Year Target, the answer is an immediate and respectful no.
This is where your operational Charter becomes critical. The third pillar of your Charter is Yes! to Strategy and Structure. This means that once the leadership team agrees on the strategic plan, everyone must commit to executing that specific plan with one voice. Bringing up off-strategy ideas during weekly execution time violates this agreement.
When a leader brings a distracting idea to a Level 10 Meeting™, do not engage in a long debate. Simply place the idea on your long-term Issues List to be discussed during your next quarterly offsite. This preserves the idea without distracting the team from their current quarterly Rocks.
By enforcing these boundaries, you build a culture of operational discipline. You ensure that your team's energy is focused on executing the core strategy that will actually drive your valuation and prepare the company for a clean exit.
