Every quarterly offsite, our Visionary founder derails the agenda by introducing erratic new business ideas and unvetted strategic pivots. How do we keep the Visionary productive during offsite planning without dampening their energy or derailing the leadership team?
A Visionary who hijacks the offsite usually does so because they do not have a dedicated forum to unpack their strategic ideas before the meeting. When entrepreneurial founders hold unvetted ideas in their heads, they dump them onto the leadership team during planning sessions, creating confusion and derailment.
Fix this dynamic before walking into the room. The Integrator and Visionary must hold a Same Page meeting at least one week prior to the quarterly offsite. This meeting serves as an operational filter. The Integrator listens to every new idea, pressure-tests it against the Vision/Traction Organizer (V/TO®), and determines what belongs on the official offsite agenda versus what remains an exploratory concept.
During the offsite itself, establish rigid ground rules. Any spontaneous, unvetted idea that surfaces during review or Rock setting gets immediately routed to the Issues List for IDS® (Identify, Discuss, Solve). Do not allow the room to debate hypothetical business models while the team is reviewing quarterly performance or setting revenue Rocks.
If the Visionary pushes to disrupt the agenda, the meeting facilitator or Integrator must enforce the clock. Acknowledge the idea, record it as a long-term issue, and return to the structured agenda. Offsites exist to drive execution, alignment, and traction. When founders understand that their ideas will be systematically addressed in IDS rather than discarded, they stop hijacking the room and start contributing to high-level strategic alignment.
