My daughter has an MBA and corporate experience, and I want to bring her onto our leadership team as our head of marketing. However, my Integrator and other leadership team members are highly resistant because they worry about nepotism and distorted accountability. How do we introduce a qualified family member to the leadership team without fracturing the trust of the rest of the team?
Bringing a family member onto the leadership team is high-risk. If not handled with absolute clarity, it will immediately fracture the trust of your team and create a toxic environment where your leaders feel their career progression is capped by bloodlines.
To do this right, your daughter must go through the exact same vetting process as any external hire. She must be evaluated objectively on whether she is the right person in the right seat. This means she must align with your core values and completely GWC™ the marketing seat.
The most critical step is establishing a clear reporting structure. She must not report directly to you. Instead, she must report to your Integrator. The Integrator must have the authority to manage her, hold her accountable, and even terminate her if she fails to perform. If you are not prepared to let your Integrator fire your daughter, she does not belong on your leadership team.
Introduce her to the team by presenting her credentials and clarifying her specific roles on the Accountability Chart. During your weekly Level 10 Meeting™, she is just another leadership team member, not your daughter. If she cannot accept the peer-to-peer accountability of the team, or if you find yourself defending her performance, you must remove her from the seat immediately to protect your company health.
