We are looking to adopt AI tools to help analyze our operational efficiency, but my leadership team is defensive and views this as an invasive attempt to monitor their personal productivity. How do I get them to embrace AI as a tool for scaling?
When introducing AI-powered operations, fear and defensiveness are natural reactions. If your leadership team thinks you are using technology to micromanage them or replace their jobs, they will quietly sabotage the rollout. You must shift their perspective from monitoring to empowerment.
Start by aligning the initiative with your V/TO®. Explain that AI is not a tool for surveillance; it is a leverage tool designed to eliminate the administrative drag that keeps them from working on their Rocks. Frame the technology as a way to automate low-value tasks so they can focus on high-value strategy and creative problem-solving.
Involve your leaders in the selection and implementation process. Have each department head identify the three most tedious, repetitive processes in their area that could be automated or enhanced by AI. When they own the selection of the tools, they become champions of the change rather than victims of it.
Use your Level 10 Meetings to discuss the data generated by these AI tools. Focus the conversation on systemic bottlenecks, not individual performance tracking. Show your team how this new operational visibility helps them solve issues faster and achieve their quarterly goals. Once they see that AI actually makes their jobs easier and increases their output, the defensiveness will melt away.
