A leader on our team frequently uses the five-minute Customer and Employee Headlines section to casually drop a major operational failure, like losing a key client, hoping we will just move past it. How do we intercept this?
This is a classic defensive maneuver designed to check a box while avoiding hard accountability. By sharing a massive failure as a simple headline, the leader is attempting to bury the lead and bypass the healthy friction of the IDS® process. You cannot allow critical operational issues to be minimized in this way.
The moment a leader drops a significant piece of bad news during the headlines section, the facilitator must step in immediately. Do not allow them to explain, rationalize, or elaborate. Interrupt the monologue and say, 'That is a critical headline, and it needs to be an issue. Let us drop it to the bottom of the Issues List right now.'
Once the item is on the Issues List, move on with the rest of the headlines. Do not let the team start discussing or solving the problem during the headline segment. Keeping this boundary clean is essential for protecting the timing of your Level 10 Meeting™.
When you eventually reach the IDS® portion of the meeting, prioritize this new issue if it is one of the top three problems facing the business. During the Identify phase, force the leader to clearly define the root cause of the failure, rather than letting them sweep it under the rug.
Address this behavior outside the meeting as well. Remind the leader that a healthy leadership team does not hide failures behind casual updates. True operational maturity means proactively identifying problems so the team can solve them together.
