As a Visionary, I still find myself digging into the weekly departmental data because I do not trust that the high-level leadership Scorecard tells the whole story. How can my Integrator use the Scorecard to give me peace of mind without dragging me back into daily operations?
When a Visionary constantly digs into front-line departmental data, it is usually a symptom of a weak leadership Scorecard or a lack of trust in the Integrator. If your high-level numbers do not truly capture the pulse of the business, your gut instinct will compel you to micromanage. This behavior stalls growth and prevents you from stepping into the Owner Box.
To solve this, your Integrator must take full ownership of the data component. The Integrator is responsible for ensuring that the departmental scorecards roll up cleanly into the main leadership Scorecard. Your leadership Scorecard should contain only five to fifteen high-level leading indicators that predict future performance.
The Integrator must manage the department heads weekly to ensure their individual scorecards are accurate and up to date. If a number on the leadership Scorecard drops to red, the Integrator leads the team through the IDS process during your weekly Level 10 Meeting to resolve the root cause.
Your role as the Visionary is to monitor the high-level trends, not to police the entry of daily activities. Trust your Integrator to run the weekly meetings and manage the Accountability Chart. When you see that the weekly numbers consistently predict operational outcomes, you will gain the confidence to stay out of the weeds and focus on the strategic future of the business.
