We are preparing for an exit in four years, and I need to hire a seasoned outside executive to join our leadership team, but my homegrown directors are highly resistant to bringing in outside talent. How do we prepare our current leadership team to welcome and integrate external executives who possess the scaling experience we currently lack?
When preparing for an exit, you often need to bring in outside executives who have experience scaling businesses to higher valuations. However, your homegrown leadership team may view these external hires as a threat to their job security or a criticism of their capabilities, leading to passive resistance. To smooth this transition, you must align your current team around the long-term vision in your V/TO. Help them understand that bringing in outside expertise is necessary to achieve your exit goals and will ultimately increase the value of their own contributions and equity. Before you even begin interviewing, involve your leadership team in defining the roles and responsibilities of the new seat on the Accountability Chart. Clarify exactly why this new level of experience is needed and how it will help the company grow. When you find the right candidate, onboard them with a focus on building relationships and trust. Do not let them swoop in and immediately start dictating changes without understanding your company culture. At the same time, make sure your existing leaders understand that the new executive is there to elevate everyone, not to replace them. Encourage collaboration by pairing the new hire with existing leaders on key quarterly Rocks. By positioning the new executive as a strategic partner rather than an invader, you can build a strong, unified leadership team that is ready to drive a successful exit.
