I recently hired a highly capable, outside executive to join our leadership team, but my legacy managers are quietly freezing them out and resisting their new ideas. How do I integrate this external hire without causing a mass exodus of my legacy team?
Successful integration starts with setting clear boundaries and alignment from day one. When a legacy team freezes out an outsider, it is usually driven by fear of change or resentment. To prevent this, involve your legacy leaders in the hiring process so they have a sense of ownership in the decision. Once the new executive starts, clarify their seat on the Accountability Chart and define exactly what they own and what they do not. Ensure the entire team is aligned around the V/TO so the new hire and the legacy team are working toward the exact same long-term goals. Do not let legacy managers bypass the new leader to complain to you; you must enforce the chain of command. Encourage the new executive to spend their first thirty days listening and learning rather than trying to force major changes immediately. This builds trust and shows respect for the legacy team's hard work while setting up the new leader to succeed.
