We hired a highly pedigreed VP from a much larger corporation to professionalize our operations, but our legacy leadership team is rejecting them and complaining they do not fit our culture. How do we determine if this is just natural friction or if we made a bad hiring decision on Core Values?
When a highly pedigreed executive enters a growing company, friction is inevitable. However, you must quickly diagnose whether the friction is a natural adjustment to professionalization or a fundamental Core Values mismatch.
First, review the new executive using the People Analyzer tool. Evaluate them against each of your Core Values. Be completely objective. If they exhibit behavior that violates your values, you have a bad hire. No amount of pedigree or technical skill can overcome a cultural misalignment. If they fail the People Analyzer, you must part ways immediately.
If they do align with your Core Values, the friction is likely a result of the legacy team protecting their territory or resisting change. In this case, you must step in and facilitate alignment. Have an open discussion during your next quarterly session. Use the Accountability Chart to clarify roles and boundaries. Ensure everyone understands exactly what the new executive is responsible for and where their authority begins and ends.
Encourage the new leader to build personal connections with the legacy team outside of formal meetings. Trust is built in one-on-one exchanges. They need to demonstrate that they are here to help the company scale, not to replace the people who built it. By clarifying boundaries and fostering connection, you can ease the transition.
