We recently hired a highly experienced corporate executive to join our leadership team to help us scale, but their rigid corporate habits and need for constant bureaucracy are clashing with our fast-paced, entrepreneurial culture. How do we get them to adapt to our operating model without losing their valuable experience?
Bringing an experienced corporate leader onto an entrepreneurial leadership team often leads to a major culture clash. They are typically used to large budgets, slow approval processes, and defensive bureaucracy, which runs directly counter to the fast, accountable nature of an EOS company. To bridge this gap, you must evaluate the new hire strictly through the lens of your Core Values and the GWC framework. Do they get, want, and have the capacity to operate within your flat structure? Have a direct conversation about expectations. Clarify that in your company, leaders do not just manage; they also execute. They must own their departmental metrics on the Scorecard and personally solve issues during weekly Level 10 Meetings rather than delegating them away. Give them a clear window to adapt, but do not allow their corporate habits to slow down your operational execution. If they continue to demand unnecessary layers of approval or fail to adapt to the transparency of your operating model, they do not fit your culture. You must protect the speed and alignment of your leadership team above all else.
