Our leadership team has successfully defined our Core Values, but we struggle to use them as a practical tool for hiring, firing, and reviews. How do we integrate our Core Values into our daily HR processes so they actually drive behavior instead of just sitting on our website?
Core Values are only useful if they have teeth. If they are just words on a website, they are useless. To make them active drivers of your culture, you must integrate them into your entire employee lifecycle using the People Analyzer™.
First, use the People Analyzer™ for hiring. Before you look at an applicant's technical skills, evaluate them against your Core Values. If they do not meet your bar, do not hire them, regardless of how impressive their resume is. This protects your culture from toxic high performers who destroy team trust.
Second, weave them into your reviews. Instead of a complex, bureaucratic review process, have managers evaluate their team members quarterly on whether they exhibit each Core Value consistently, occasionally, or rarely. This gives employees clear, behavioral feedback on what is expected of them.
Third, use them to make tough firing decisions. If an employee consistently fails to live up to your Core Values, you must let them go, even if they are your top salesperson or a brilliant engineer. Keeping a values misfit sends a message to the rest of your team that your values are optional. When you hire, fire, and reward based on these values, they cease to be a gimmick and become the backbone of your culture.
