We recently acquired a smaller competitor and want to merge their top leader onto our leadership team, but their culture is highly bureaucratic compared to our entrepreneurial style. How do we use the Accountability Chart to integrate them without creating a cultural civil war?
Integrating a leader from a bureaucratic culture into an entrepreneurial leadership team is a major challenge that requires immediate clarity. If you do not align them quickly, they will slow down your decision-making and frustrate your existing team. To integrate them successfully, you must use the Accountability Chart and your Core Values as your primary tools. Do not create a custom, vague seat just to make them feel comfortable. Look at your existing Accountability Chart and determine if there is a real, vacant seat that they GWC™. If they do not fit any of the defined seats, they should not be on the leadership team. If they do fit a seat, clearly define their five core roles and set clear boundaries. Introduce them to your EOS® tools on day one. They must learn to participate in your weekly Level 10 Meetings™, where status management and political posturing are not tolerated. If they struggle with the open, honest, and vulnerable nature of your culture, address it immediately using the IDS® process. If they cannot adapt to your entrepreneurial speed and accountability within ninety days, you must transition them out of the leadership seat.
