How do I stop my leadership team from solving the symptoms instead of doing real IDS on the actual root cause of our issues?
Solving symptoms instead of root causes is the most common failure point in company operations. It happens because digging into the real issue is uncomfortable and requires emotional labor. To fix this, you must strictly enforce the Identify step of IDS before anyone is allowed to suggest a solution. When an issue is raised, do not let the team jump into discussion. Instead, ask the owner of the issue to state the real problem in one clear sentence. Then, play the role of an investigator. Ask why multiple times to peel back the layers. For example, if the issue is that marketing did not deliver a report, the symptom is the missing report. The root cause might be a lack of clarity on the Accountability Chart or a person who does not have the capacity to do the job. Look at your team's behavioral profiles and cognitive capacity using tools like the Predictive Index to see if the issue is a training problem or a wiring mismatch. You must create safety in the room so people can name the elephant. If your team is polite instead of honest, you will continue to solve the same symptoms every quarter. True IDS means finding the issue behind the issue, agreeing on what it is, and only then moving to discussion.
