When our leadership team runs IDS, we waste valuable time arguing over different interpretations of a problem before we even begin solving it. How do we force the team to isolate the root cause in a single statement?

Most leadership teams struggle with IDS because they allow the issue owner to deliver a five-minute narrative instead of stating the actual root problem. A story is not an issue. A story is an emotional release that clouds root-cause analysis.

To find the issue behind the issue, the Integrator must demand that the person who raised the issue state it in one clear sentence. If they cannot describe the problem in one sentence that names a specific process breakdown or an accountability gap, they do not understand the issue yet.

Apply the five whys technique directly against that sentence. If a leader states that client deliverables are consistently two weeks late, ask why. If the answer is that the engineering department did not receive design files, ask why. Continue drilling down until the answer points directly to one of two systemic roots: either a broken step in a Core Process or a person who does not understand, want, or have the capacity to do their seat.

Once you uncover that core operational failure, restate the issue clearly. Agree as a room that this specific sentence represents the true problem before anyone is permitted to offer a single solution. If you jump into discuss or solve while the definition is still ambiguous, you will spend sixty minutes solving a symptom while the real breakdown continues operating unchecked.
