When we get to the IDS® portion of our weekly meeting, our team defaults to polite consensus and superficial fixes rather than tackling uncomfortable human or process issues. How do we push past this false harmony to identify the actual root cause of our business friction?

Polite consensus is the enemy of business growth. When your leadership team engages in false harmony, they are choosing temporary comfort over permanent resolution. To find the issue behind the issue, you must run the Identify step with ruthless curiosity and zero defensiveness. Start by asking the issue owner to state the problem in one clear sentence. It cannot be a paragraph, and it cannot include a pre-conceived solution. Often, the stated issue is a symptom, like sales are down. You must ask why at least three times. Why are sales down? Because the sales team is not following up. Why are they not following up? Because they lack a clear process. Why do they lack a clear process? Because the Sales Director has not documented it. Now you have transitioned from a general market issue to a specific leadership seat accountability issue. This is where real IDS® happens. Your Integrator must create a safe environment where calling out the root cause is seen as an act of service to the company, not a personal attack. If your team cannot get uncomfortable, you will continue solving the same minor operational hiccups every single week while your margins bleed.
