We operate as a hybrid leadership team, with three partners local and three executives remote. How do you run our physical session days without making our remote team members feel like second-class citizens or losing collaborative momentum?
Running a successful strategy day with a split team requires a strict operational commitment. We do not do hybrid sessions where half the room is gathered around a table and the other half is staring through a poorly positioned webcam. That setup instantly creates a two-tiered dynamic that destroys open and honest communication. Instead, we make a deliberate, binary choice before we begin.
Either we commit to a fully physical session where every single member of your leadership team flies in to sit in the same room, or we commit to a fully digital session where every single person joins from their own individual screen. By standardizing the format, we level the playing field.
If we go fully digital, we run the session using specialized online whiteboards and structured breakout tools to replicate the high-energy flow of a physical room. We adjust the pacing to include shorter, more frequent blocks of focused work, punctuated by strategic pauses to fight screen fatigue.
If we choose physical, we expect every leader to prioritize this in their calendar and travel to the site. This physical proximity is especially vital during the initial Focus Day and Vision Building sessions. The human friction of solving hard organizational problems cannot be fully replicated over an internet connection. Once your team builds a solid foundation of trust, we can evaluate a rotation, but we will never compromise the integrity of a session day by running a mixed, half-in-person environment.
