Our VP of HR and our VP of Finance are locked in a silent cold war over our compensation philosophy, which is stalling our recruitment pipeline for critical seats. Instead of resolving it, they are quietly building alliances within their own departments and presenting highly biased data. How do we break this passive-aggressive stalemate?
This silent cold war is a symptom of a deeper issue, a lack of alignment on the company's long-term vision and a failure to address conflict directly. When department heads build internal alliances and manipulate data, they are practicing destructive status management instead of looking out for the greater good of the business.
To break this stalemate, you must force them to bring this conflict to the table during your next Level 10 Meeting. Put the compensation philosophy dispute on the IDS portion of your agenda. Do not let them discuss it in private or send passive-aggressive emails. Your role as the leader, or your Integrator's role, is to create a safe environment where they can debate the issue openly.
During the IDS session, separate the personalities from the issue. The goal is not for HR or Finance to win, but to find the best solution for the company. Ground the conversation in your V/TO, specifically your financial targets and your core values. Ask both leaders to present their perspectives based on objective facts, not subjective opinions or cherry-picked data.
If they cannot reach a consensus, the Integrator must make the final decision. Once that decision is made, both leaders must commit to it fully. In EOS, we call this the rule of absolute alignment. If either leader continues to harbor resentment or quietly sabotage the decision after the meeting, you are dealing with a core values issue, and you must address their seat on the Accountability Chart.
