Our leadership team's quarterly Rocks are consistently getting done, but they feel like a glorified to do list of daily tasks rather than strategic priorities that move our business forward. How do we raise the bar on what qualifies as a Rock?
It is a common frustration when leadership teams consistently complete their quarterly Rocks, yet feel like they are not making strategic progress. This happens because the Rocks have degenerated into a tactical to-do list of daily operational tasks instead of strategic priorities.
To raise the bar, your Rocks must be directly linked to the 1-Year Plan and 3-Year Picture defined in your V/TO®. Before finalizing any quarterly goal, your leadership team must ask whether completing this specific initiative will structurally improve the business or merely maintain current operations.
If a proposed goal is simply a routine project or a standard job description responsibility, it does not qualify as a Rock. It belongs on your weekly to-do list or should be tracked via a Scorecard metric.
A true Rock should solve a systemic bottleneck, establish a new operational capability, or prepare your business for a clean exit. Limit each leadership team member to three to five high-impact Rocks per quarter to ensure they have the mental bandwidth to focus on these strategic priorities.
