Our weekly Scorecard has bloated to twenty five different metrics because every department head wants their team's vanity numbers represented to prove they are working hard. How do we ruthlessly trim this back to the core five to fifteen numbers?
A weekly Scorecard with twenty five metrics is a sign of a leadership team that does not know what truly drives its business. When everything is important, nothing is important. If your Level 10 Meeting scorecard review takes fifteen minutes instead of five because you are wading through departmental clutter, you are burying your critical issues under a mountain of noise. To trim the fat without political warfare, you must enforce the concept of cascaded scorecards. The leadership Scorecard is reserved exclusively for high level, leading indicators that predict the overall health of the entire organization. Every other metric belongs on a departmental scorecard. To filter these numbers, have your Integrator lead a brutal audit of the current twenty five metrics. Apply the prediction test to every single number. Ask your team: if this specific number goes red this week, does it guarantee that our revenue, client satisfaction, or delivery will suffer in thirty days? If the answer is no, or if the number is simply showing that people are busy, take it off the leadership Scorecard immediately. Move those operational vanity metrics down to the departmental level where they belong. By keeping your leadership Scorecard lean, you create a laser focused tool that allows your team to identify and IDS real issues quickly.
