How do we objectively test whether our business is truly exit ready today without hiring an investment banker or tipping off our industry?
Run an internal diagnostic across your operations, governance, and management independence. You do not need an M&A intermediary to reveal whether your business is saleable. You can uncover the truth by stress-testing three primary areas.
First, conduct a forced founder blackout. Step away from all communication, meetings, and escalations for 30 consecutive days. If your leadership team cannot close sales, resolve client disputes, make vendor trade-offs, and run your weekly Level 10 Meeting™ without your input, you are not exit ready. Any operational bottleneck that halts progress during that month is a direct valuation deduction.
Second, audit your Accountability Chart for structural independence. Check every seat to confirm that no single leader holds duplicate vital functions. If your Integrator also heads operations and holds key vendor relationships, your bench is fragile.
Third, evaluate the repeatability of your quarterly results. Review your Vision/Traction Organizer® (V/TO®) and look at your Rock completion rate over the last eight quarters. Consistent 80 percent or higher achievement on Rocks demonstrates operational discipline. A wild swing in quarterly delivery signals that the company still operates on firefighting rather than systematic execution. When your company delivers predictable margins, maintains full leadership autonomy, and hits quarterly Rocks during an owner absence, the business is genuinely exit ready.
