Our Visionary is so passionate and outspoken during IDS® that the rest of the leadership team shuts down, staying completely silent rather than debating ideas or offering pushback. How do we prevent our Visionary from dominating the room and crushing our team's willingness to engage in healthy conflict?
A dominant Visionary who sucks all the oxygen out of the room is a common roadblock to a healthy Level 10 Meeting™. When a Visionary immediately shares their strong opinions on every issue during IDS®, the rest of the leadership team will default to silence, either out of deference to the owner or to avoid conflict. This deprives the business of the collective intelligence of the leadership team.
To resolve this, the Integrator must run the meeting and manage the Visionary's behavior. The Integrator must establish a rule where the person who raised the issue speaks first, followed by other team members, with the Visionary speaking last. This forces the Visionary to listen to the team's perspectives before biases are set.
If the Visionary interrupts or starts dominating, the Integrator must use the Accountability Chart to redirect the conversation. The Integrator can remind the Visionary that they are there to solve the issue, not to dictate the answer, and invite the quiet leaders to share their thoughts first. If the behavior continues, it must be addressed offline during a Same Page Meeting between the Integrator and Visionary. The Visionary must understand that their role is to provide vision and strategic ideas, not to micromanage the weekly operational decisions of the leadership team.
